It includes examples of Byzantine and post-Byzantine ecclesiastical art: icons, liturgical and priestly vestments, woodcut crosses, gospels, cups, trays, spoons and many other useful objects. Ancient City of Minoa

This is one of the three ancient cities of Amorgos. It is located above the port of Katapola, on the south slope of the hill. The ruins of the ancient city, like other cities of Amorgos, were identified in 1837 by L. Ros who described the buildings in detail. The findings of the first excavations (mainly inscriptions which are now in the museum of Syros) were performed by the French School at Athens in 1888 and they added new information concerning the history of the city from the Hellenistic period (3rd century BC) to the Roman period (3rd century AD).

Arkesini Acropolis

This is an ancient citadel that was active until the Venetian period. It is on a rocky hill above the sea, north of the village Vroutsis at the lower side of Amorgos (southwestern part of the island). The remains of a Middle Cycladic settlement which cover a long period from the Geometric up to the Roman era (inscriptions, sculptures, ceramics etc.) have been found on the rock of the citadel.

Churces of the Castle

Kyra Leoussi is believed to have been built during the Byzantine times. It was probably the first metropolis that housed the painting of the Virgin. The temple hosts interesting paintings of the Cretan School with the one of Mary Glikofilousa being the principal painting. Another interesting temple is the temple of St. Constantine which was flooded with water for many years so its frescoes have been destroyed. Below the castle you will find St. John the Theologian. These churches and more like them (30 in total) are locked and thus, not accessible to the public.

Panagia Chozoviotissa

This is the most famous attraction of Amorgos. It is situated in the Southern harbourless coast, nestled within thorny rocks, visible only from the vast sea that lies beneath the 300 meters high cliffs. The white façade of the church is in harmony with the steep rocks. If you go near, you will notice the white geometric designs and the strict linear outline of the building. As the sunlight falls on the church, an illusion of a multi-level surface is created.
